‘That Was So Hebden Bridge!’ Creative Writing Memoir Showcase

Author Robert Fear runs a creative writing showcase every year on his Fred’s Blog. He then selects various contributions for publication in an anthology. I am delighted that two of my contributions are set for inclusion this year!

‘That Was So Hebden Bridge’ is the first piece. It’s a preview of a chapter from my upcoming book More Manchester Than Mongolia, which will be the second installment of my Wayward Truck series. The new book will follow our first year at large in The Beast, the 24.5-tonne truck we bought blind off the internet to convert into a tiny home-on-wheels fit for a trip to Mongolia.

You can read about how we bought and converted the truck in the first book: Building The Beast: How (Not) To Build An Overland Camper. Released in April 2024, the book was awarded a Readers’ Favorite 5* seal and is a finalist in the Page Turner Awards 2024.

You can read Robert’s intro and my author bio here, with a link to the story, or go straight to:

For Authors – Creative Writing Showcase

If you are an author and would like to participate, there is a section for both fiction and memoir, it’s free to enter, and the showcase is open to submissions from April to September. You can find the details on Fred’s Blog. If you subscribe to the newsletter, you can stay informed.

Depending on the level of support, selected stories will be published in two separate
anthologies (one for each category) at the end of the year.

Robert’s 2022 anthology 40 Life Changing Events features my story, A Street Dog Named Blade, based on events that happened in my third book, Dogs ‘n’ Dracula: A Road Trip Through Romania, when we adopted a Transylvanian stray.

Welcome to Kosovo was published in the 2023 travel anthology, 50 Intriguing Personal Insights

Kidnapped by Aliens in Slovakia: The Perils of Being A Brit Abroad and Ladies Who Launch: My First Ever Windsurf Race appeared in 30 Evocative Reflections 2024.

  1. Congratulations on having That Was So Hebden Bridge and A Symphony of Horrors: Oravský Castle, Slovakia included in the anthology and congratulations on all the other publications as well. Lots of adventure and literature.

  2. Well done, Jackie! You are on a writing roll! But, then again, you have been for a while. 🙂 It’s awesome you’ve had contributions included every year in Fred’s showcases. I’m curious: do you write new pieces for this or take (and twerk) excerpts?

  3. Thank you so much, Liesbet!

In the past, I have written pieces especially for the showcases, however, these two are pieces I just had to write at the time they happened!

This one (So Hebden Bridge) is based on a chapter from my forthcoming book, More Manchester Than Mongolia, which I’m working on at the moment. I had to add some context at the beginning, which is hopefully not too boring…

The second one, about Oravský Castle in Slovakia will be a chapter from about the third book down the line after a tour of Britain, Albania, and the Balkans! 🙂

I’ve got sooooo much writing to do….
