Author Robert Fear runs a creative writing showcase every year on his Fred’s Blog. He then selects various contributions for publication in an anthology. I am delighted that two of my contributions are set for inclusion this year!
‘A Symphony of Horrors: Oravský Castle, Slovakia’ is the second piece. Besides exploring a rather fabulous castle, it delves into a cinematic legend and reveals the secret of eternal youth…

If you would like some further reading to enjoy with your morning coffee, check out the other entries from some of my favourite memoirists and celebrated travel writers. Check out the Fred’s Blog 2024 Memoir Showcase here.
The first piece is That Was So Hebden Bridge! It’s a preview of a chapter from my upcoming book More Manchester Than Mongolia, which will be the second installment of my Wayward Truck series. The new book will follow our first year at large in The Beast, the 24.5-tonne truck we bought blind off the internet to convert into a tiny home-on-wheels fit for a trip to Mongolia.
You can read about how we bought and converted the truck in the first book: Building The Beast: How (Not) To Build An Overland Camper. Released in April 2024, the book was awarded a Readers’ Favorite 5* seal and is a finalist in the Page Turner Awards 2024.
For Authors – Creative Writing Showcase
If you are an author and would like to participate, there is a section for both fiction and memoir, it’s free to enter, and the showcase is open to submissions from April to September. You can find the details on Fred’s Blog. If you subscribe to the newsletter, you can stay informed.
Depending on the level of support, selected stories will be published in two separate
anthologies (one for each category) at the end of the year.
Robert’s 2022 anthology 40 Life Changing Events features my story, A Street Dog Named Blade, based on events that happened in my third book, Dogs ‘n’ Dracula: A Road Trip Through Romania, when we adopted a Transylvanian stray.
Welcome to Kosovo was published in the 2023 travel anthology, 50 Intriguing Personal Insights
Kidnapped by Aliens in Slovakia: The Perils of Being A Brit Abroad and Ladies Who Launch: My First Ever Windsurf Race appeared in 30 Evocative Reflections 2024.
