From the Rat Race to Quiet Coastlines: Emily Endean’s Journey to Following Her Dream

How quitting the rat race, moving into an old Hymer and embracing vanlife helped one photographer pursue her passion.

There’s something I love about people who dare to step away from the conventional path and create a life that works for them. Perhaps that’s because Mark and I did something similar when we swapped a more conventional existence for life on the road.

Through the vanlife community, I met Emily Endean, who comes from my adopted hometown of Bournemouth. Emily’s story is a reminder that sometimes, following your dream means changing not just what you do, but how you live.

And now, she’s on the verge of bringing her photographic passion to life in a beautiful new book, Quiet Coastlines.

Ditching the rat race for vanlife

Emily wanted to build a career in photography, doing what she loved rather than getting caught up in the relentless round of weddings and corporate photo shoots.

But pursuing a creative dream isn’t always easy when you have bills to pay and the everyday costs of life to contend with.

Her solution? Ditch the rat race, move into an old Hymer campervan and embrace vanlife.

Living in a van gave Emily two valuable things: mobility and lower living costs. With fewer financial demands and the freedom to move around, she could devote more time and energy to developing her photography and pursuing the kind of work that truly inspired her.

It’s a lifestyle choice that many of us in the vanlife community understand. When you strip back some of the expenses and expectations of conventional living, you may discover that you have more freedom to pursue the things that really matter to you.

Of course, vanlife isn’t all idyllic views and waking up somewhere beautiful. There’s plenty of reality involved, too. But for Emily, it offered a way to make her dream more achievable.

And that dream has led to Quiet Coastlines.

More than a book of photographs

A photographic book might seem a world away from a traditional memoir, but I think there’s a story behind every creative journey worth telling.

Quiet Coastlines represents more than a collection of images. It reflects Emily’s decision to step away from a familiar career path, rethink the way she lived and make room for her passion.

Rather than simply fitting photography around a conventional working life, she changed her circumstances to give herself the opportunity to pursue it on her own terms.

That’s what makes her story resonate with me. It’s about having the courage to question the accepted way of doing things and finding your own route towards a more fulfilling life.

And as anyone who has followed a dream knows, getting to the point where you can share the results with others takes determination, hard work and a fair amount of perseverance.

I’m Emily – an award-winning outdoor freelance photographer from the UK, capturing soulful imagery inspired by wild places, shifting light, and life lived outdoors. An ocean addict and nature enthusiast at heart, I’m best known for my emotive land and seascapes and my deep connection to the natural world.

Since 2022, I’ve been travelling with my photography work, teaching, and creating while chasing light across coastlines, mountains, and remote landscapes.

I help brands tell aspirational but believable lifestyle stories that feel real and human – my clients range from unique stays, tourism boards, adventure gear to everything inbetween. Along the way, I’ve built a passion for education – running immersive photography workshops for mixed genders, alongside empowering, female-focused tours designed to create space for confidence, creativity, and community behind the camera.

Beyond workshops, I offer 1:1 editing sessions and carefully crafted presets for photographers who want to refine their style, improve their workflow, and develop a more intentional approach to editing. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to elevate your work, my aim is to help you create images that feel true to you.

I also speak at photography and outdoor events across the UK and collaborate with leading creative and outdoor brands, producing authentic lifestyle content rooted in storytelling and connection.

Whether waist-deep in the sea or teaching in the mountains, my mission remains the same: to connect people, to each other and to nature, through photography.

“Photography has never just been a hobby or a job – it’s a way of being, a lifestyle. It’s an honour to capture the world as I see it, and it truly feels like my life’s calling.”
