‘That Was So Hebden Bridge!’ Creative Writing Memoir Showcase

Author Robert Fear runs a creative writing showcase every year on his Fred’s Blog. He then selects various contributions for publication in an anthology. I am delighted that two of my contributions are set for inclusion this year!

‘That Was So Hebden Bridge’ is the first piece. It’s a preview of a chapter from my upcoming book More Manchester Than Mongolia, which will be the second installment of my Wayward Truck series. The new book will follow our first year at large in The Beast, the 24.5-tonne truck we bought blind off the internet to convert into a tiny home-on-wheels fit for a trip to Mongolia.

You can read about how we bought and converted the truck in the first book: Building The Beast: How (Not) To Build An Overland Camper. Released in April 2024, the book was awarded a Readers’ Favorite 5* seal and is a finalist in the Page Turner Awards 2024.

Comic Memoir Book Review – Building The Beast: How (Not) To Build An Overland Camper

I am delighted to share with you this wonderful review of my new book, Building The Beast: How (Not) To Build An Overland Camper by D.G. Kaye, herself a distinguished memoirist, who chose my book for her Sunday Book Review.

“This book is an incredible read. It may be called Building The Beast, but this is so much more than the build, and so far away from a ‘how-to’ manual. This is a memoir about the author and her husband and their big dream to build a roadworthy mobile home to travel and live in. It is wonderfully written with rich descriptions about their retirement dream and every single obstacle they encountered from searching for the right vehicle to the many trials and tribulations they faced on the way to the build. Click HERE to read the rest of D.G. Kaye’s review, or follow the link below.

It is rather timely, since today, 1st July 2024, is our three year Beastversary – we have been touring in The Beast since 1st July 2021. You can check out our adventures on my Truckin’ About page.

“No,” Mark replied with confident finality.

“I might take my paddle board out…” he added with a mischievous grin.

“No,” I said, with confident finality.

I know what he’s like, trying to paddle across borders like he did on Lake Ohrid, between Albania and North Macedonia. Although that didn’t involve any countries with closed regimes who were at war.

Russia on the far bank
