Czech Pont Charlie – Karlovy Vary & Loket, Czech Republic

Founded in 1370 by Charles IV, King of Bohemia, Karlovy Vary is renowned for its thermal springs and is the largest spa town in the Czech Republic. ‘Karl’ is Czech for Charles and ‘Vary’ derives from the Czech word vařit which means ‘boil’, so roughly translated, Karlovy Vary means something like, ‘Charlie’s Hot Tub.’

Charlie also has a bridge. Charles Bridge in Prague is named after the same king and could quite feasibly be known as Czech Pont Charlie.

Sommerach to Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic

I laughed out loud as we got caught behind the slowest tractor ever, which crawled up the hill out of Sommerach at a speed so leisurely that it failed to register on our speedometer.

Besides every plan going horribly awry, a further feature of this year’s tour has been a plenitude of Farmer Palmers. They seem to lie in wait, then shoot out from their side roads the minute they see us coming with the caravan.

Bitch Slapped by Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany

The monotonous, flat panorama buckled into a few low, forested hills as we drove across the Franconian wine country towards Bamberg. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bamberg came highly recommended.

There were even a few nice villages en route, which contrasted sharply with Düllstadt, a town near our campsite, which lived up to its name and said everything about the immediate area. Düllstadt’s only feature was a brown, tourist sign which advertised Kartoffeln – potatoes. And that was the most exciting thing about Düllstadt!
