The Pont du Gard

Nous Sommes Citoyens de France – We Are Citizens of France! The Fab Four are now officially Le Quatre Fabuleux. Following our trip to the vet, they got their DHPP vaccinations, French passports and a pipette for leishmania, a mosquito-borne disease to be wary of near the Med. On American Independence Day, they gained the freedom to travel throughout Schengen, which is more than we will be able to do at the end of the Brexit transition period. (For more information on why we put  The Fab Four on French passports, see Pet Travel Post Brexit.)

As a treat, we took Le Quatre Fabuleux to river for a stick chase and then drove around to find a back way into the Pont du Gard. Continue reading “A Week in Provence – The Penny Pincher’s Guide to Pont du Gard”

Lovely Lani

“You’re a sweetie. You’re my gorgeous girl. I love you soooo much!” crooned Mark.

“What would you like me to do?” the satnav’s harsh, electronic monotone scythed across the tender moment.

“Shut up. I’m talking to Lani!”

Strangely, that was the last that we heard from the satnav’s unpredictable voice-activation. As a result, we missed several turns, although blame did not fall entirely on the Silence of the Satnav.

“I’ve said before that you’re blind and deaf, but you do make up for it by not being dumb…” Mark crooned to me.

Well, my parents did always say, “You’re never alone with a Jackie!”  Continue reading “The Magic of Morvan; Jargeau to Vézelay, Bourgogne, France”

Kai looks shocked; was it the cold shower or the hairpins?!

My day kicked off with four ten-second bursts of freezing cold water, full in the face. Continue reading ““To Boldly Go Where No Van Has Gone Before!” Gran Paradiso – Italy”

Paradise Found!

I tend to fill the kettle and leave it on the hob the night before. In the compact living space of the caravan, this means that all I need to do is lean out of bed to reach the knob to switch it on for my morning coffee!

The occupants of the tent next door were up early; it was 07:30. The smell of toast wafted into the caravan. I love the morning smells of a campsite. In Britain, the delicious smell of bacon frying…

My reverie was interrupted by the shrill screech of the smoke alarm. I shot out of bed. The kettle was still cold! It seems that half asleep, in semi-darkness and without my glasses, I had turned on the grill rather than the hob. Crumbs in the grill pan explained the smell of toast as they heated up to the point of near combustion… Thank goodness for the smoke alarm. Otherwise maybe WE would have been toast!
